Good Morning;
November has been a whirlwind month as we have tackled our Financial Campaign, Thanksgiving food collection, All Church Thanksgiving dinner, kick-off of practice for the Christmas Cantata and Children’s program, the Winter Bizarre, Community Blood Drive and decorating the church in preparation for Advent and Christmas; all this on top of all the regular activities that go on. I am reminded of what Mrs. Charles Cowman said, “There is no music in a rest, but there is the making of music in it.” In most music there are moments of no music, we call these moments, “rests”. Though there is no sound there is purpose in them, a purpose that contributes none-the-less to the effectiveness of the music. The same is true for life. As we play the melody of each day there needs to be times of rest. Rests do not distract but enhance the music of our day and prepares us to continue the song that God gives each of us more effectively. But too often we just keep playing, louder and faster and leave out the rests and our song gets complicated and confusing and we grow weary. As we prepare for Thanksgiving and the beginning of Advent let us look at the music we are making and evaluate our use of “rests”. Are they there or have we left them out? Like Mrs. Cowman observed, there is the making of music even when we rest, and the music of our life will be more pleasing to everyone, especially to ourselves.
Sing your song with joy and enthusiasm but don’t forget the rests!
Pastor Gary
