Lone Range Parenting

Mar 3

Have you ever wondered what to do as a parent? Sometimes we want to be the “Lone Ranger’s” of parenting. That can work…for a while. Then, we can get discouraged or frustrated and if we have the idea that we should or have to parent without help then we run into problems. We have an abundance of resources at our fingertips. We can also seek out people whose wisdom we value, people who have raised their children in a way that we respect.

So, where do you turn when you just don’t know what to do? Do you remember that you can pray? On one hand it seems like as Christians that’s our answer for everything, “oh, just say a prayer.” It can be a pat, cliché type of an answer…if we let it. Or, we can let prayer be life changing, life sustaining, and a real help for us. When we pray for our children, it has a lifetime impact on who they are. Prayer becomes the foundation upon which we build everything for our family.

There is something within us that yearns to reach to God when we are in need. Does this always mean that when we arise from our prayer that our need is fixed, our worry is gone…if only it were so. Yet just as we are parents to our children, God is a parent to us…and desires for us to reach out and let ourselves be encouraged and cherished.
